DNA profiling Grade 12 Life Sciences Notes with Activities Questions and Answers DNA profiling, also known as DNA fingerprinting or DNA typing, is a technique used to identify individuals based on their unique DNA characteristics. It relies on the fact that every individual (with the exception of identical twins) possesses a distinct genetic makeup encoded in their DNA molecules.

Notes

Every person except identical twins has her/his own unique DNA profile. It can be described as an arrangement of black bars representing DNA fragments of the person.

It is used to:

  • Identify criminals
  • Identify dead bodies
  • Identify relatives
  • Identify paternity
